Partnerships

ActewAGL supports a variety of local education initiatives and events which demonstrates our commitment to education and the community. These initiatives and events include the Australian Science Festival, ACT Training and Excellence Awards, The Smith Family's Learning for Life program and Young Achievement Australia.

Koomarri — a local organisation that provides services for people with a disability — and ActewAGL have enjoyed a rewarding four-year partnership.

ActewAGL partnered with the ACT Department of Education, Youth and Family Services in 1999, to develop the ActewAGL education website specifically for our schools. The website provides information about local electricity, natural gas, water and sewerage services.

Integral to our support of Koomarri is our relationship with Floriade, Canberra's annual flower festival. During Floriade we run the high-profile ActewAGL Gnomes competition, open to schools, businesses and non-profit organisations. All proceeds from the competition, and a donation wishing well at the ActewAGL Children's Village, are given to Koomarri.

Environment

In regards to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, ActewAGL will take the following actions established in the 2007-2008 Environment Action Plan:

1.1     continue to participate in the National Greenhouse Challenge Plus program and lower overall controllable emissions generated by ActewAGL, allowing for growth, in the course of its own day-to-day operations

Primary target: reduce the ActewAGL greenhouse emissions footprint by two per cent and report annually to the National Greenhouse Office.

1.2     meet mandatory targets set by statute in NSW and the ACT and administered respectively by IPART and the ICRC for reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases from the production and use of electricity

Primary target: report to the ActewAGL Board annually whether the number of certificates surrendered met the legislated requirement.

1.3     monitor emissions of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas from sub-transmission equipment.

Primary target: maintain measurable gas emissions to less than one per cent of network inventory levels.
ActewAGL participation in the Greenhouse Challenge contains 54 actions aimed at reducing or controlling its greenhouse gas emissions. The Agreement’s 2005-2006 progress report identified controlled (those actions we directly manage) emission savings of 900 tCO2e and influenced identifiable emission reductions of almost 345 000 tCO2e by ActewAGL’s customers.   The following actions are indicative of the project types that ActewAGL undertakes.

Sales of Green Energy to Customers (Continuing Influence)
During 2005/06, sales of green energy to customers continued and will continue during FY 2006.  These sales influenced abatement of almost 17 000 tCO2e.

ActewAGL GreenPower Purchases (Continuing Control)
Purchase of GreenPower for ActewAGL buildings continued, saving over 450 tCO2e.

Wastewater Reuse (Continuing Control and Influence)
Approximately 1 900 million litres of waste water (about 1 900 Olympic sized swimming pools) was re-used by ActewAGL and its customers during FY2006, saving over 235 tCO2e.
