Martin Lomé Testimonial

I started with ActewAGL 4 years ago and am the manager of water projects and I am proud to say that I work for ActewAGL.

The people I work with have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the delivery of water projects. Working in Water Division for ActewAGL provides a unique opportunity for technically orientated people including project managers to be involved in a wide variety of projects not only limited to the area they have specialised in. The ActewAGL organisation is of a size that allows close involvement in projects from the planning stage through to completion. There are real opportunities for people to acquire solid breadth and depth of experience.

ActewAGL places a high emphasis on environmental compliance and sustainability. We always look for solutions that minimise impact on the environment. Employee safety is paramount. ActewAGL has a strong safety culture and the safety of our employees and contractors is extremely important to us.

The water and wastewater systems in Canberra comprise interesting and unique features. We also have a diverse program of projects to deliver over the next few years. ActewAGL is a learning organisation where employees are constantly encouraged to evolve and grow. We welcome and encourage innovation and in many ways we help our people to succeed.

I am an electrical engineer working as a Project Manager in Water Division. I started with ActewAGL as a graduate and participated in the Graduate Program. As part of this program I completed several rotations and as such gained exposure to different areas of the business. This gave me the opportunity to try out various roles to see what was most interesting, and provided me with contacts throughout the organisation.

I have been working in the field of Project Management now for over six years, and have found it both challenging and rewarding, due to the diversity of the work – ranging from ‘hands on’ design, contract management, site construction, and finances – and the satisfaction of seeing your project evolve from concept through to completion. I’m also fortunate to be working with and learning from a great bunch of engineers with solid technical credentials as well extensive industry experience.

There is no better time to join the industry. With so much money currently being invested in water infrastructure, there are many interesting projects to look forward to, and certainly no shortage of work and opportunities.

I’m currently working as the Operations Manager in the Field Services Branch, Water Division for ActewAGL. I started with ActewAGL as a part of their Graduate Engineering Program and have worked in several positions within Water Division including time at our sewerage treatment plant and part of the project team building a new water treatment plant. There are lots of opportunities and challenging roles within ActewAGL.

We maintain the sewerage and water network right across Canberra so experience can be gained in sewerage or water treatment, planning, project work and day to day maintenance and operations. Given the current drought and importance of water as an essential resource, there are lots of interesting projects to be involved in.

My current work is challenging as we manage people and resources to keep the sewer, water and stormwater networks operating. Every day is different and it is satisfying to be able to see the results of my hard work and how it contributes to the organisation and people of Canberra. ActewAGL is a great company to work for and it looks after its employees really well with great conditions and a flexible working environment.

I started with ActewAGL in 1994 as a labourer, and as a result of various career opportunities, I am currently a Design Officer in the Project Design Branch, Networks Division. My main roles and responsibilities include, project estimation and design, project monitoring, CAD drafting, and liaising with key stakeholders. ActewAGL has a very positive culture and there is a real sense of camaraderie. The workforce culture is extremely positive and I am surrounded by good people.

The scope of my work is quite varied and I am constantly given new and exciting challenges. I gain a real sense of satisfaction from seeing something that I have designed and monitored come to completion. ActewAGL has very flexible employment conditions and excellent opportunities for training and development. If you are willing to work hard there are lots of opportunities for promotion. The organisation has a strong commitment to the community and a focus on the safety of its employees.

I started work with ActewAGL 21 years ago and currently hold the position of Manager Health, Safety, Environment and Quality. I joined ActewAGL as an Electrical Fitter/Mechanic working on construction projects. After several years working as a Fitter/Mechanic I decided that I wanted to go to University and study to become an Electrical Engineer.

ActewAGL encouraged this and offered me a cadetship for the duration of my studies. ActewAGL has been very supportive of my career development and I have had the opportunity to work in a number of roles and areas within the organisation. These have included areas as diverse, Solar generation, Communications systems and Network Operations In my current role the key responsibilities are the management of our Quality, Safety and Environmental systems and their accreditation, our Training programs and delivery including our apprentice training, managing staff welfare programs and our Health and Safety policy and procedures.

ActewAGL’s size makes it a flexible and dynamic place to work allowing me to gain experience across a wide variety of areas. My work is extremely varied and always challenging, life is never boring. ActewAGL has a strong peer support network with open sharing of knowledge and expertise.

Fiona Wright Testimonial

I started my career with ActewAGL in 1993 as a Cadet Engineer; in 1997 I began working as a Graduate Engineer and am now currently employed as Customer Works Manager, Networks Division.

I was initially attracted to ActewAGL because of the cadetship as I would not have been able to afford to study away from home had I not had the financial assistance that this gave me.  The cadetship was fantastic; I was able to study my electrical engineering degree full time at the University of Wollongong all the while knowing I had a team to support me.  I spent my university holidays working at ActewAGL and gaining valuable experience which gave me an advantage in my university studies

I am currently on 12 months maternity leave however upon my return to the organisation I will be managing approximately 90 staff responsible for: The Construction of new electricity networks, Pole and Line Inspection, Electricity Metering and Vegetation Management for the entire ACT region. This involves providing technical advice and consultation with my team, Safety Issues, Communicating regularly with the workgroup, Process engineering and control, HR/IR issues (managing an industrial workforce), reporting and administration

ActewAGL is large enough to offer many professional career paths and prospects, yet small enough to offer flexibility and true family friendly values to cater for individual’s needs. Being a multi utility there is diversity not present in many other companies.  For example there are roles for electrical engineers in not only Electricity Networks, but also in many other divisions of ActewAGL water, wastewater, and communications.

Jim Howarth Testimonial

I joined ActewAGL on the 17th June 1985 and am the oldest surviving member of the Zone Substations Team. My role involves maintaining all equipment in the 132kV substations as well as passing on the knowledge I have gained through working in the maintenance/construction areas of substations and transformers. I also mentor the newer members of the team who work with me e.g. attitudes and work practices specific to ActewAGL.

I was initially attracted to the company because of the good wages, and access to different and interesting work and continue to believe that our wages/conditions are one of the company’s strengths. We have access to fantastic equipment and there is a very strong focus on safety within the organisation.

One of the most engaging parts of my current role is the ability to see a well planned job through to completion. When we achieve a great result and everything is working well I gain great satisfaction from my work.
