Background
Mainco is a United Group Limited and Connex joint venture. Connex operates the Melbourne suburban rail network under a franchise agreement with the Victorian State Government.
Mainco is responsible for the asset maintenance and annual works (preventative and reactive maintenance, and renewals) of the entire Melbourne metropolitan broad gauge railway network.
- Mainco is a Melbourne based organisation with offices located at 1 Spring Street and at Flinders Street Station
- Maintenance management, engineering and management systems are conducted at its Flinders Street Station offices, and at a substantial office and depot facility located at E-Gate, North Melbourne.
- Distributed across the Melbourne metropolitan area are an array of depots strategically located to support the :
- Track
- Electrical
- Signals
- Communications
- maintenance and renewal activities.
- Specialist communications maintenance resources are co located at the centralised train control centre, Metrol, and at Flinders Street Station
- Upgrade and reliability improvement Projects are planned and managed from a facility at Burnley.
Capabilities
A comprehensive array of railway infrastructure is maintained and renewed including:
- Track consisting of rail, sleepers, ballast , drainage systems , points and crossings
- Electrical systems including the 1500 volt DC overhead supply catenaries, its supporting structures and the substations for transforming and feeding this supply to the network
- Signal systems including crossing protection equipment (flashing lights, boom barriers, pedestrian booms and gates)
- Communications systems including the central train control facility (Metrol) computers, passenger information display system (PIDS) and train radio system
- Station buildings
- Station platforms, elevators and escalators, access ramps, carparks, fencing and barriers
- Signage, fencing,
- Lighting for stations, carparks and the rail corridor
- Structures including rail bridges, subways, crossings and tunnels
- Vegetation management within the rail corridors
Mainco has a project management capability covering project development, planning, and estimating through to project control and supervision during execution.
